THE RESULTS

The Mystic Magic 2020 Challenge has now come to a close.
This Challenge was set up to beta test the new Turn Point Challenge system and has been a great success.  From a system point of view we think it is now looking great, very user friendly, performing well and ready for the season ahead.

Aside from testing the system, the Mystic Magic Challenge was a lot of fun.
With the COVID lockdowns, regional Victoria has been lucky to have fewer restrictions than Melbourne so 17 local pilots of all skill levels were able to get out and enjoy it.  Even during our winter conditions, there has been a few days where pilots were still able to get out and achieve some great results.

For the most turn points tagged during the entire challenge - in the advanced class David Cocks won with 36 Tps tagged, followed by David Snowden on 32 and Roger Turner on 30.  Well done guys!

For the most turn points tagged in a single flight Dave Cocks won overall with 23, then Phil Joughin  and Wally both with 18.

Fantastic flying guys!
Winners each category are shown below.  Full results and results in each category can be found here.

WELCOME TO THE VICTORIA 2020 TURNPOINT CHALLENGE

The Victorian Turnpoint Challenge is our signature challenge and is run annually for the spring & summer Australian flying season.
With over 750 turnpoints scattered across the state there is ample opportunity for pilots everywhere and of all skill levels to participate.

Designed to encourage pilots to try new sites and even new flying styles (inland vs coastal) this is a must-do challenge for anyone that loves their flying and wants to stretch their wings further this season.

The challenge is also a fantastic way to see where to fly if you are visiting from interstate.

All flights should be uploaded within 2 weeks of the flight having been completed AND they must be submitted within 7 days of the close of the challenge.

THE WINNERS

Hi All,

The Victoria 2020 Turnpoint Challenge has finished up as of the end of April 2021.

Congratulations to all who participated.  It has been an amazing season with pilots of all levels extending themselves, trying new sites and flying further.

THANKYOU:

There are a few important thankyou’s before I get to the results; I would really like to thank:

  • Our sponsors: Bright Flight, VHPA, Fly2Base and Manilla Paragliding.  You have provided a solid financial base for us to move forward.
  • The Turnpoint Challenge committee Duane, Pete, Jacqx, Ray, Snowy, Jan for all your work and support for the challenge.  A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to make this possible.
  • The individual pilots who provided donations through the GoFundMe page.  You have also helped with the financial base for us to move forward.
  • All the pilots who participated.  We really hope you all got something out of it.

NOW FOR THE SCORING:

We have come up in the world.  This year's prize will be a TPC buff for the top pilot of each category (only one per person 😊).  On top of that, there should be a lot of recognition - there were some amazing efforts and flights with pilots at all levels extending themselves.  Well done and congrats to all and especially the winners in each section.

AWARDS:

We have two awards categories:

  • Most unique turnpoints tagged in the season
  • Most unique turnpoints tagged in a single flight

and 5 pilot categories of Fun, Sport, Advanced, Expert & Tandem.

The ladder with submitted flights can be found here https://www.turnpointchallenge.com.au/results.

Last season we were very impressed with Snowy reaching 100 waypoints.  This season we had 5 pilots scoring over 100 waypoints.  Wally tagged an amazing 236 and Snowy, hot on his heels doubled his score from last year with 204.  Amazing flying guys.  Well done.

Impressive results again in this category again with Wally, Thomas and Dave Cocks topping the score with 32, 31 and 30 respectively.  However, it must be said that Thomas Clavel got 40 turnpoints last season. Something to aim for next season perhaps?

WHERE ARE THE WAYPOINTS

With over 750 waypoints in the Victoria 2020 challenge, there are plenty of opportunities for pilots to achieve really great results.  Enjoy the excitement of launching from new locations and stretching your wings in unknown areas.
The turnpoint challenge helps give purpose to your flights, especially when flying an unfamiliar site.

Please give the map at least 30 seconds to appear with the waypoints on it .. sometimes it can be a little slow.

DOWNLOADING VICTORIA 2020 WAYPOINTS

Waypoints last updated v1.2 @ 4:00pm 31 August 2020

Different flight instruments require different file formats for their waypoints.
We have attempted to be as flexible as possible by providing 3 different waypoint formats.

If these 3 options don't suit your needs then try converting the waypoint file to one that suits your instrument using GPSDump.

If you need help uploading the waypoint files check the FAQ & TIPS page to see if we have written any how-to manuals for your flight instrument.

1.  WPT format

This is a common file format for a lot of flight instruments.
When importing it into your flight instrument please remember to set a 400m cylinder radius for each waypoint.

Some instruments allow you to set a standard default, others will require you to set the cylinder radius for each waypoint.

Some of the coastal waypoints are actually in the ocean however, with the 400m radius tagging the turnpoint will not require flying over the ocean.

REMEMBER: You do not need to hit the waypoint in order to tag the turnpoint.
See FAQ - What is the difference between a waypoint and a turnpoint.

2.  CYLINDER AIRSPACE TXT FORMAT

Our resident guru Jan has created an airspace file that you may be able to use on some flight equipment.  It will automatically show all of the turnpoints as 'general' airspace and will neatly draw the turnpoints at the correct 400m radius on your maps.

You may need to check your equipment settings to see what notifications these turnpoints will produce as it may be a bit disconcerting to be constantly alerted to airspace infringements.

Our 'cylinder' airspace file has F class airspace entries in it, so you can tailor your flight equipment to display and notify for F type airspace accordingly.
We have called it a 'cylinder' airspace file as all of the airspace areas within it are cylinders.

REMEMBER: You do not need to hit the waypoint in order to tag the turnpoint.
See FAQ - What is the difference between a waypoint and a turnpoint.

3.  KML FORMAT

One of the best ways to familiarise yourself with the waypoints locations is to see them on Google Earth.  This allows you to see the terrain that you will be flying over, landmarks etc.
If going to a site you've never flown before this is a great 'warm-up' for your flight.

Just download this file and import it to Google Earth and take a virtual flight.

NOTE:  These are waypoints, not turnpoints so you will not see the 400m cylinder on Google Earth.
If flying coastal waypoints don't be alarmed if some of them appear to be over water.  When the 400m cylinder is added you will be able to fly over land to achieve the turnpoint.

REMEMBER: You do not need to hit the waypoint in order to tag the turnpoint.
See FAQ - What is the difference between a waypoint and a turnpoint.
